Suffolk Countryside and Coastal Tour
As a result of requests by our Members in our Annual Questionnaire, a coach outing has been arranged to Suffolk for a Countryside and Coastal Tour. Together with our Guide we will explore a wonderful part of England, which is like being in a time warp. We will be visiting some quaint villages and towns, and experience how we used to live. This is an enchanting and very different coach excursion to some wonderful relaxing places like visiting ‘A land that time forgot’ with its lovely olde worldly charm.
DUE TO THE POPULARITY OF THIS EXCURSION, THIS SECOND OUTING HAS BEEN ARRANGED
On Wednesday 4th July 2012
Our coach will depart from outside
Teston Village Hall at 8 am.
and The Wateringbury Hotel at 8.05 am.
Returning to the Villages about 7.30 pm.
Enjoy a day visiting the Suffolk coast – one of the most fragile regions in Britain.

We will meet our Guide in Woodbridge, off the A12 just above Ipswich, where we will have a comfort stop to buy morning refreshments. Suitably refreshed we head towards the sea passing through Orford with its ancient castle keep built by Henry II, via Snape then to Aldeburgh, a town very much threatened by the awesome power of the sea where we stop to see The Moot Hall. Once in the centre of the town it now teeters on the water’s edge. Man will not win this fight. There is a timeless feeling in Aldeburgh where fishermen still sell their catch on the beach and Sir Benjamin Britten and the tenor Peter Pears created the annual Aldeburgh Festival. If you want you can walk along the beach and see Maggi Hambling’s controversial sculpture.
On to Dunwich for lunch. Here the town has already been claimed by the sea but this is still a well known spot largely due to the brilliance of the Flora Tea Rooms. Like The Pilot at Dungeness this is an exemplary example of that very British tradition of a famously good fish & chip lunch.
In the afternoon we continue along the coast. Thorpeness is an eccentric puzzle of mock Tudor houses, a man made lake and the quirky “House in the Clouds”. We are heading to the elegant little town of Southwold. Nothing noisy or garish could ever hope to flourish in this Edwardian resort. Old cottages of great charm cluster the gleaming white lighthouse and candy coloured beach huts line the shore. Join our Guide to explore the finest mediaeval church in England, home of “Southwold Jack”. The day draws to its relaxing conclusion with free time to enjoy the ambience of this jolly seaside town and pick a spot for tea before heading home.
